My 5T/5SC Project

Post by FluxNZ » Fri May 18, 2012 8:13 pm

Taken awhile but finally got here.

The goal is to create a setup that is different from current Savage 5T/5B designs using custom designed TVP's and other custom components. I've removed the standard Flux transmission and replaced it with a centre differential using my own designed mounting plates. All of the custom parts are design by me and drawn in CAD for the machine shop to work off.

Will start off by listing all the parts used in this project as well as the custom machined parts:

Custom 5T TVP's machined from aluminium designed for a centre differential set-up.
Custom motor/battery plates and motor cradle machined from aluminium.
Golden Horizon bulk heads (Re-anodised gun metal).
Golden Horizon aluminium shock towers (Re-anodised gun metal).
Golden Horizon aluminium bell crank (Re-anodised orange).
Golden Horizon aluminium servo horn.
HPI Baja 5B SS VVC front shocks x4.
HPI suspension conversion kit (Re-anodised orange).
HPI sway bar kit (Re-anodised orange).
HPI Baja 5B steering turn-buckles and rod ends.
HPI HD cup joints.
Hotbodies HD front/centre/rear differentials.
Castle Creations 1520 1600kv motor.
Castle Creations Mamba XL2 ESC

Thanks badboy. Had a lot of time to figure out the setup I wanted.

Adding some more details.

HPI Baja 5B steering turn-buckles and rod ends.
Image

How I connected the Baja shock to get full travel (truck will bottom out before the shocks do). Use parts from the Baja shock kit and mounted the bottom point to the outer hub pin with cap head bolt (12.9 strength), the lower spacer from the Baja kit pushes the bottom of the shock just enough away from the lower arm so there is no binding. The Golden Horizon shock tower has multiple holes to mount the top point which I bored one of the holes out to 4mm while using the other Baja parts as spacers.

This is what a lot of time and money look like. I'm extremely jealous dude. Your setup looks like its factory, that's awesome.

My vorza CD diff gets hot but I don't think you will have an issue. However you may want to try he OFNA diff lock lube with 8s or silly putty. 500k is super thick and runs extremely smooth with 6s I just can't imagine 8s

TVP Design.

Did all my design in CAD (SolidWorks). Guys at work use AutoCAD so I exported the file to .DWG so they could print the files to scale. I then cut out the printed TVP's and glued them to 5mm Balsa wood to create a scale mock up of they design which I could attach parts to.

Photos from one of the first designs which are 'ugly' (can see one of the later designs on a sheet in the first photo) and I was still getting used to the how the image on the screen can give you a false impression to scale and proportions. Once printed out you can get a real feel for the look. This design changed very quickly after the first mock up :D

More work to decide where parts need to be located for weight balance using one of the later design revisions.

Total of 14 revisions to get to my current prototype.

Have to wait on the motor/battery plates and motor cradle to be machined. None of the aluminium is finished or anodised yet. Will update as I get further into the build and will answer any questions you guys have if your left scratching your head why I did 'this' and 'that'

Nothing much to report on the project at the moment just waiting on those last bits to be machined.
