I just got my XS SS.
I don't have any diff fluid, and my hobby shop doesn't carry any!. I guess I can just use dabs of grease like the instructions say for now?
Is there anything special about RC Diff Fluid? can it be bought from somewhere else? Auto store?
I'm going to order some what should I run? 30k front 10k rear? or something like that? |

| I think the manual says something like 3000wt for the rear and 7000 for the front. I'd have to look again. Before I modded my diffs I ran synthetic wheel bearing grease in my diffs, feels about 30,000wt maybe a bit less. That is if you don't want to wait to order some oil. |

The manual just calls for grease thats included so running that for the time being.. I'm going to order a bunch of diff fluid though I need it for my Flux HP also.
Started building it tonight. First kid build in about 15 years. Man I hate all these tiny little parts! Almost finished with the front end, but having real trouble with the screws the kit came with. I tried about 5 different 2mm drivers all of them sort of work if its not threading into fresh plastic. but there is two on the bulkhead I just cannot drive in. 2mm driver to small 2.5mm to big. Not sure whats up with that. Going to go buy some fresh drivers tomorrow and hope that fixes it.
All parts came in today.
SS Kit,
Vektor motor,
Futaba RX,
Hobbywing Ezrun SC8 ESC
Cheap EXI Digital servo for now.
Getting started on the build.
Front diff. I feel like I need 4 year old hands all these tiny bits.
Most of bag A assembled. ( front end )
Two screws I was unable to get to go in my hex drivers all slip. screws don't seem stripped either every driver I tried is worn out or the screws are not a precise size.

| The stock hpi screws suck big time, while putting the new MMP two screws stripped while threading into the hole, not tighting down just threading it in. I would suggest getting a set of better screws. 12.9 seems to be the best option out there |

| Yea it seems like the screws are stripping, but they are not. Its my drivers that are turning inside the screw its like they are slightly bigger than 2mm. |

I think they mix metric with standard. That's my belief because if you get a standard size drive it'll fit. Try it. |

I tried standard sizes too they were not working either..*shrug*
Just went to the hobby shop no 2mm hex wrenches. lol.
Went to ace and bought some replacement screws that I'll have to cut to the right lenght.
I swear these HPI screw heads are larger than 2mm even with a brand new hex key wrench on a brand new screw its not tight lots of slop. |

Got some more done tonight. I need to wire all my electronics up before I continue as I Don't want to mess with setting my servo horn on when this thing is put together..looks pretty tight workings.
Oh yea @$@#$@ these HPI screws. I think i strip every single one thats going into fresh plastic. I went to ACE hardware and bought an assortment and oh what do you know..they work PERFECT in the same *censored* hole that the HPI ones strip constantly.
My rear diff feels really notchy..not the diff itself but if i turn the driveshaft( or the cup its really really grabby I don't know whats up with that. the front ones not as bad )
Anyway finished the front and rear end. Started on the frame, got the battery box done which was also a pain the the butt.
Really good news is my 3s 5400mah SPC racing batteries fit LOL! there is like zero room but they fit. Soft case's i'll try to get a pic. My gens ace 2s hard cases fit also.

Batteries:
No Room to Spare! but it fits
Gens ace fit no problem
First time having to solder wires to an ESC. I think I left them WAY to long but whatever.
The hobbywing ESC is nice it came with wires, shrink wrap, screws, mount plate, sticky tape, Bullet connectors.
The bullet connectors I soldered on too, they happen to be the perfect size for the Vektor motor I got.

Got it all finished other than painting the body.
And I need to replace about 6 stripped out crap HPI screws. most of them were not that important ( one in the side of receiver box, one in the side of the motor cover box )
Drove it once it rips!, the tires have like no traction whatsoever though at least on pavement. Wheelie over backwards once. Not driving it again till I get the body done.
-Configuring all the electronics. Luckily I have a hobby wing program card or it would have sucked doing it all by blinking lights.
I had to take a dremel and remove the rear of the ESC tray so my hobbywing esc would fit.
-Starting on the shocks. Screwing the nuts on the shaft was tricky I used some non sticky side of gorrilla tape and put them in vice grips worked well to hold it from spinning without buggering up the shaft.
-Shocks and wheels on. I left my wires crazy long, is there any downside to that other than its a mess?
-Zip tied the power switch behind the rear shocks, couldn't find a good place for it.
-awaiting paint

And I be done!. Oregon State theme paint job. Got a little sloppy with the masking, but whatever it will get beat to *censored* soon enough.
Tommow I bash it.

What the? where did you get it from?
Send it back.
And to the other comment yea I will probabaly change the tires. These ones SUCK no traction. Strange because the same tread on my Flux HP work great. Must be the compound and size/weight difference.
Pics next to its big bro the Flux HP ( out of commission waiting on parts )

Bashed the crud out of it today.
WOO its a little ball of crazy. No breakages, no issues. Ran two 2s packs through it. hottest it got was 164 and that was after running the second pack without letting it fully cool after the first.
I need a new servo ( its on order ).. the $9 EXI .20 speed 111 torque one i had laying around is so slow its not even funny how slow it is. I have a nice savox on order though.
Hobbywing ESC is working great. I can't pull any wheelies but I cant tell if its my esc lagging ( just a setting )..or the slipper, or the tires.. It mostly seems like the tires. they just peel out on pavement. |

| HPI Geolanders are great general purpose. Love the paint job man, looks great. You may find that you'll need an external BEC for that Savox. Badlands aren't bad but if you spend any time on pavement they are like ice skates. With the geolanders my RTR pulls wheelies like mad, hence the wheelie bar mod. I just finished a SS kit last weekend. Running a 4000kv HobbyKing sensored motor with a Mamba Max Pro. Very happy with my combo in the kit so far. |

I don't spend a lot of time on pavement. I'll check out the geolanders. also I noticed friendofrc/rcnightmare on youtube were using proline masher/basher 2000's that looked pretty cool and larger.
Why would I need a BEC for the savox? the hobbywing has build in BEC. Noob question.
I have a Hitec spendy servo in my Losi and its fine.
I think I need to gear down if I want to run 3s? I'm running the stock 28t pinion and whatever the stock spur is. but it came with a diffrent spur and a 24t pinion. |

Savox higher end servos have a tendency to glitch around center. Even after turning the BEC voltage up on a Mamba Max Pro, it still had the problem. It depends on whether this esc has a linear or switching BEC. For example, the mamba max pro has a linear bec. Castle told me that they have tested Savox servos and found that most linear becs can't handle them. My situation is not in a XS, but I run a mmp in one of mine. I currently have a hitec 5645 in my rtr and like it. I have a 5625 (more speed, less torque) on the shelf waiting to go in the SS. They are programmable.
Also regarding your wiring, longer wire=more resistance. I took 4" off my vektor motor wires.
I run 3s on stock gearing all day long in the rtr. I am going to install the optional gearing in the ss to try it out. |
