The hard anodized bodies are exactly that - hard, they would hold up to the damage you have on your shock body there a bit better. And its also a color preference thing. I like grey, so so I would get some gun metal bodies. Like I said, this is when money isn't an issue.

No, I dont run them like that. The collar was all the way down for the pic. I was trying to show the top when I took it.

Can anyone confirm that the X conversion kit from Innovative RC would work on a Savage XL?

Get a hold of Rob at IRC and ask him. Order it and get a tracking# all while you have his attention. His cust service needs improvement. Other than that look up the part#s for the shock toers and a arms and see if they are the same.

The set for the x works on the xl aswell cause the arms should be the same and so are the shock towers.

Yeah it should work fine, and you can run the rear shocks on the front of the rear a-arms instead of using the tierod relocation bracket.

PostPosted: Thu Dec 04, 2008 3:45 am Post subject: Re: How To: LST Shock Mod Reply with quote

I might add a further and specific point - Kiz mentioned that the IRC shocks may not work with LST shock hop-ups. Well, based on info in this topic I ordered RcRaven springs from the states. Will get to those in a sec, but here is an important note:

IRC shocks will not accept LST springs. The IRC springs are thinner (not the actual metal, the overal width of the spring). This means that the IRC retainer will not hold any LST springs (including Ravens). I will investigate putting Losi retainers on the IRC shock (can't see a problem - even if the IRC shaft is thicker - whats the worst I need to do? slightly enlarge the hole in the Lost retainer? I honestly think this will do the trick and will also give me the ability to change IRC springs without removing the cap.

As for the Ravens.......obviously can't run them yet. Dropping the truck on the ground is enough for the spring to pop past the retainer. Now, I have a heavy rig. Proline 40 series w/ Moabs, IRC full extension, 250cc tank etc. There is absolutely NO NEED for any pre-load with the Ravens - and I couldn't be happier. I'm running 35wt oil and may go to 40-45. The springs are a lot stiffer than IRC's - which to be honest, are too weak unless you are running a light weight rig. All these comments around springs are based on the intention of having the driveshafts/dogbones horizontal when the truck is sitting. To do this with the IRC shocks/springs, you need a bit of pre-load and the spring isn't stiff enough to stop bottoming out over even the smallest of drop/jump.

So......hopefully tomorrow I can pick up some Losi retainers and fit them tomorrow night and give it a try. Personally, I'm pretty confident.

Now that I've done the IRC shock mod and waited so long for them to be instock - if someoneis after doing this conversion, I'd recommend sourcing Aftershock/LST2 shocks and running Ravens. For a big jumping and/or heavy truck, I think that would be the best combo.

Is it that much better than the stock 8 plastic HPI shocks - well, the jury may be out and I suspect that it will be horses for courses. However, I like the look, less maintenence (4 shocks vs Cool, and with the Ravens - the stiffness required for a heavy truck.

Hope this helps folks.

A quick note - IRC sell retainers to fit LST springs. I should have mentioned that before. Glad you like your shocks though, zoo. I'll add this in the main post.

I noticed that IRC sells those retainers after my post. Will still try to get a hold of Losi retainers today.

Edit:

Well, got a hold of Losi retainers today. BTW - RCHobbies (Sydney folk) has a fantastic new and much larger store. All I can say is - what a breeze. Fitted the Raven springs and IRC shocks perfectly. Now the IRC is a truly great shock(with the right springs) and with no preload will maintain a slightly raised (from dog bone horizontal) stance after compressing. Brilliant. Very happy.

For those with IRC shocks and looking at fitting LST style aftermarket springs - I'd recommend the Losi retainers (part number LOSB2900 I think) as unlike Robs LST spring retainers, they can easily be popped off to remove the spring. (Sorry Rob  Laughing ).

Haven't ran yet, but the improvement over the IRC spring setup (I'm runnign 35wt) is substantial with the Ravens.

I had a feeling 60wt was too much lol....was at the lhs and thought i would re build the stock shocks...so I asked (before researching on here) what would be a good all round oil??? They pointed to the 60wt....dang it...cant even take it back already filled the shocks.

Thanks for the info kiz. Rob had said that early january he would have a set of IRC black anno'd shocks ready and would save a pair for me but, 3-4 emails later and no response, I decided to go with the LST2 shocks. The blue works as far as color is concerned and I think ill just check into getting some alloy caps to match them. Thanks for the write up!

If you are upgrading only the towers to X, you'll only need this upgrade: http://www.innovative-rc.com/product_info.php?cPath=21_24&products_id=176&osCsid=ffd9221b474ef8e6d75f25eb21d287f2
It will update the upper shock mounts to fit the X towers.

However you might be able to get by without buying anything at all, if I remember correctly I think the middle holes on the 25 IRC mounts line up with one of the holes on the X towers, so you could see if that works before purchasing the above upgrade.

Yes it will work, i had a 25 with the irc kit, then i got rid of it and got an x but kept the kit and my old arms off the 25. The upper irc mounts will fit the x towers, its a little tight but not too bad, just uses different holes in the mounts for the bolts to go through the towers. So there is really no need to buy the x upper mounts unless you just want to.

I've just picked up some Raven springs to replace my sagging softy IRC springs. What a difference, you are right! They appear to be the perfect rate for heavier trucks and you need zero preload, a far cry from the stockers. They are a lot bigger and have a wider diameter too. I'm very happy. The only other difference I am making is to mount the shaft ends on the middle hole on the IRC lower brackets instead of the top. I'm cutting the top section of the bracket off because otherwise it interferes with the shock bottom. (Flipping them over doesn't help because it will catch on the ground)

Excellent write-up and thread KiZ, well done mate. Very helpful. But...
I've got GPM's "LST" shock which you didn't mention, hopefully not because they are crap.
I'd like to get the RCRaven springs and Losi's Ti-Ni shafts, do you or anyone else know if they will fit? Just want to find out before I fork out $35 for a set of springs, and $16ea for the shafts. Cheers.

Hm, I wasn't actually aware that GPM made LST shocks! If they are replica LST shocks, then the parts should fit no problem, however I can't tell how much license GPM has taken in to modifying the design. You could try emailing GPM to ask. Their email is: chinngai [at] netvigator [dot] com

With regards to quality, I would hope they aren't too bad. I have GPM shocks on my rc18 and they have been pretty much flawless since I bought them, several years ago now.
