SavageBEING... That is AWSOME..! I am very impressed with that design.. I can tell that will hold up to some serious abuse.. I am suprised that I have not seen your work.. You should show that off. I think there is a lot of people that should see that.. Once again, NICE work and keep it up...!

Peak:

I sent you a PM

Twisted:

Thanks Exclamation I have seen your cages and you did inspire my design with the plastics you where using. Little did I know I could buy it for cost from my job. Finally a small peark! I don't show it of too much. I just read threads most of the time. And beat on my truck!

I hope to help other people make their Savage's as tough as they need them, buy sharing these ideas. I took my buddy and I 12 hours to make these cages and they have been worth every second it took!

I dont think that metal will hold up to seriouse bashings
This is why.
1: The middle is weak with no support.
2: The shock towers will break on hard landings
3: where's your body, the body gives strength to ur truck keeping crap and bad things like dust and ect out of your truck.
4: no flex because all the pressure is put in towers casueing towers to break.
5: can easyly break shocks becasue when the shock towers go through a beating the shocks are taking the same abuse.

It probaly suits your bashing but for hardcore bashers your cage might not be able to take the beatings.

well believe what you want... and pretend like i don't do hardcore bashing.. I guess ramping over my house is something "ordinary" bashers do.. doesn't really matter to me.. I've never broken a shock tower or shock since the bars have been installed. I take that back.. I did blow up one shock, but that was the result of a 12 - 13' fall onto one tire.. my fault.. a body provides no strength.. keeping dust out? I think not.. I used to drive it with the body on, but it's just too impractical and gets in the way... But to each his own..

skapunk8301.. I do applaud your creativity.. but I have a strong feeling that your cage wouldnt last for a hardcore basher. I am not speaking from a point of veiw without testing. I have tried all different types of material, in a lot of different designs.. Nothing has even come close to the reliability of the plastics. Be sure to watch the big companys start to switch over to plastic protction as its cheap, light wieght, and it can take more than any type of metal will ever be able to withstand. On the truck in the second pic, can you mount a body? and truely as long as it holds up to what your doing thats all that matters. Keep up the good work..

I definitely agree with you about plastics.. they are definitely the thing of the future. But you can't beat $3.00.. even if you have to replace them every 5 or 6 bash sessions(which i haven't needed to, but from what i hear, i am not a hardcore basher Very Happy ) it's still only $3.00 and about 15 minutes of your time!

http://www.mcmaster.com/

i have been buying my machining supplies and materials from these guys. they will sell small amounts and do not have a min order. i bought some bearing-grade bronze and drill rod for a diff mod, some delrin for my own cage, and have designs for some other stuff.

i ordered a 4' section of delrin tubing and it was under $5 (granted it was a little smaller in dia than what you guys are using- but not much), the shipping was closer to $20, however.

Dam good point.. I hear that and I understand you completly...

raynman ... Wow shipping is that much.. We were ordring a lot from them so I dont remeber the shipping charges... but that hurts..

yeah, a 4' heavy cardboard tube w/ wood plugs- i guess fedex saw me coming. one downside to this site, that i forgot to mention, is that they accept your order w/o calculating shipping. my eyes popped a bit, but it was already on the way.

I agree with Twisted thru and thru. Plastics are the key.

I have made my cage with UHMW for the side plates and Delrin rod threaded and tapped, for the cross braces. I mounted the back to the Bulk Head Cross Brace. The front has a Delrin Rod added just above the Out Cup on the Transmission which the Side Plates are threaded into. You can see the silver screw on the side photo.

To anyone who is trying to find these types of material try some one who sells Bearing and Power Transmission Parts. I work for B.C. Bearing in Canada.
We sell these types of materials.

Here is my cage. It has been put thru *censored*, and flexes like you would not believe in a hard crash.

Hehe,

That design is great, but I managed to snap it just before christmas Sad
It snapped @ the rear section (jsut above the body mount) after a couple of hard bashes/landings.

The new design also lasted a matter of days, not sure if Im heating the rod enough before bending.

Hi Pete

That is your design to some affect. You sent me the e-mail with some advice on how to build it. THANKS MAN Very Happy . I used UHMW for the side plates, as it has way more flex than the Delrin does. It has held up super well. Flexes like crazy on hard impacts.

Bash On.

Pete

It's called UHMW (Ultra High Molecular Weight or Weave) is what it stands for ... I think.

You should be able to buy it from the same people you got the Delrin from.

It should hold up better than the Delrin did!

Cheers Mate!

I am very impressed with the design of the halfback cages. I am not sure I like the look all that much but I have seen too many tweeked metal cages, and no damages to the plastic cages. So I will have to live with the look and give this stuff a try.

Rooster B

Bashin before Fashion.

I don't really like they way the cage looks either. But I HATE the look of the 3 week old engine I killed before I had a cage on my truck. Evil or Very Mad

I was thinking of trying to build a nicer one now that I know it will hold up.... but you know how that goes. If it ain't broke don't fix it! Twisted Evil

Very nice creativity guys! I agree that some type of plastic is the only way to go and as Twisted-Toys said it is the future and look for the big companies to do some molded plastic cages that will blow away any metal cage!

My Twisted-Toys cage is still going great!
