I locked each bone in the vice and increased torque until they snapped. All were locked into the vice by the end and twisted at the other end. All but the gpm failed at the end being twisted.
Stock black - 6.5l ft/lbs $10
HD chrome - 8 ft/lbs $14
IRC - 14 ft/lbs $23
GPM titanium - started to twist at 19 ft/lbs. increased to 32 ft/lbs they didnt snap until they twisted all the way around almost two full reveloutions. $29
Thanks to those who sent me some test subjects. The stockers came in an envelope with no return add. Kiz? I would love to get my hands on some other types to test. New era, FLM the new 5.9's or any others you guys can find.
Just for kicks the stock lst2 shafts gave way at 11.5 ft/lbs. |

apperently you get what you pay for, everyone costs a little more but is slightly stronger, what do you want to pay?
good job sv250,this is pretty interesting, is there anything else that we can test? maybe shocks? |

Nice round of tests SV260, your a credit to Sith Lords everywhere.
So the stock black ones actually snapped at 6.5 ft/lbs, weird i went through all the HD ones at a rate of one per bash until i switched to stock blacks and never had a problem after that.
But Wow GPM Titanium, who would of thouht eh?! Looks like their using the good stuff. Light too i'd imagine. |

| Great post bud, one Q though. Was there any difference in flex between the stock and hd hpi shafts? I snap the hd's like toothpics yet the black ones seem to last a little better, maybe because they have more flex? thanks. |

| That is nice to know. thanks for your testing and to all who helped with the parts. I gives you an idea on what you want to purchase. Were all the dog bones new? |

If there was it was minimal. They both snapped in a 1/4 turn or less. Didnt really pay attention as to flex until the gpm one just kept going. Maybe the centers are weaker allowing them to bow a little. 6.5 to 8 isnt really nuch difference. I know my cordless drill can put down 12 to give you an idea of how tight that is. I'll dig them out of the trash and see if there is any marks showing how much they twisted beffore snapping. |

Ok, got a pic. You can see the IRC and the GPM allowed flexing. All bones were straight beffore. You can actually see the machine line in the metal showing how much each twisted. Not sure how good it will come out in the pic. You can see both hpis snapped almost instantly.

wow intresting results there, dont for get this just shows what there twisting strain is, there are many many other factors going on when they are in the truck being abused and with this kinda of part it is allways a trade off from high strength steel, which can be brittle for this application, to something little softer but that is for giving and will give and take some and last that bit more.
its allways about its yield and tensile strength, ductility and fracture toughness or plaint old swings and roundabouts as they say
hmm let me see if i can find some Maraging steel now thats some tuff old stuff not to mention pain to machine lol |

Great job SV. I sent my bones off to you but I'm not actually sure they were sent till Saturday, so if some other random bones turn up, thats my lot. It was a small white package with an SC logo and no return address.
Excellent results, pretty linear too. Good to know the IRC's are over twice as strong as the blacks. The XL axles will be very interesting indeed! I would like to point out that the black bones I sent were already stressed, they had twisted maybe 30*, and the HD bone I sent was a shorty for the center drive line. I don't think this is fully over till we test a set of brand new bones. But otherwise, good stuff.
Thanks. |

| This wasnt your pkg then. Wonder who's it was. Oh well. The HD bone and GPM bone were brand new from my stash. The IRC bone was also new in package from Rob at IRC. The black bones appear to be new. Somebody sent me two in the mail. Reg envelope no return add. When I get Kiz's pkg I'll twist them up too and see if they are the same. |

| Good job! And titanium will have more bend but once it bends to a certain point its useless even if it doesnt snap. |

| ya true but it didn't even start to bend until 19 ft/lbs the next strongest broke at 14. Truth is your never going to bend them, even if you did they'd keep you in the race. |
