Just went to install the new high speed third gear and when looking at the instructions it shows you how to remove the three speed, but the diagram that comes with the new gears shows a two speed in which u take the roll bar off and then take the top off the transmission with the slipper clutch attached and proceed to exchange the new gears. My question is this, I'm i going to have remove the whole transmission, just like i did when i installed it to start with (it's a rtr 4.6) or am i just missing something simple ? I mean it seems prettyy straight forward, there is no other way to get the transmission out. You have to take the tvp off the left hand side at least right ? By the way hpi could do much better on instructions, they seem kind of generic if u know what i mean ? |

i have them and installed them on a 3 speed. how ever unforunatly i installed them when the tranny was NIB. and i cant remember if i took the whole thing apart.
i followed the instructions on the sheet. if it says u dont need to take the whole thing apart. then u dont need to. its an easy install. |

| If you have the easy access X case, then you can just take the top off. If you have the original tranny, you will have to remove the whole tranny by taking one of the TVPs off first. I would use that opportunity to upgrade to an X case if I were you. You can buy them cheap on ebay. |

| yep, you want to get the 85052 trans case, allows quicker 2nd gear shift point adjustments, by only removing the top secticon of tranny. |

Ok, heres what should be the last word on the help for three speed. Three days latter and some help from all u guys and heres where it;s at. If u start with a RTR 4.6, and u want to go with the three speed u just need to order the gear set hpi sells as the conversion. It will cost less and u will get to know your truck even better. At some point u will have to break down your truck and if u do it when u put the three speed in u will get to know where things go and how they work. I started with a 4.6 RTR with the tranny that has the top that u can just lift off and get to just about everything u need to. I to ordered the three speed that was allready assembled. I put it in and it runs great ! Well now i want to put the new third gear in it and to do that i am going to have to take the two speed apart (that originally came with the truck, the one with the tranny top just comes off) and take the three speed that is all ready in the truck, out and split the cases also and replace everything back to the one with the cases that come off at the top. I hope that makes sense ? In other words if i just would have ordered the gear set, all i would have done to replace the gear and the three speed to begin with is a few screws and the top off the cases and "presto magic o" So, cancel the order for the three speed allready assembled, and spend some time with the gear set. You will save some money and get to know your truck that much better. And you will feel a much greater satisfaction, that u did it your self and will be ready to take on something else. Hmm, maybe that mid tank mod ??
Well every thing is back in the right places and time to haul *censored* !!!
Thanks for everyones help ! |

If you are refering this three speed upgrade:
http://www.hpiracing.com/products/en/77065/
Then you still need to start with a three speed tranny, since there are alot more parts to make it all work.
Another option is to buy an XL tranny from an ebay chop shop (it already has this high speed third gear installed). Otherwise you have to also order the 3-speed upgrade (http://www.hpiracing.com/products/en/87220/) AND the high speed third gear set to put in the case you already have.
On a side note, you have to take the entire tranny out if you plan on adding reverse (regardless of which case you have). |
