Hey all, a new savage owner over here in Australia.
2 weeks Ago I bought a Savage SS 4.6 ... Its my first Nitro vehicle that I've owned (owned an electric Tamiya and co-built a Nitro Tamiya) and I wanted to make a post.
First of all, dam I'm lovin this beast. Took some time to build but when it was finished gave it a good break in, now its bashing time.
I've taken it up and down the road and accross to the park a few times now, Just really starting to want to tune it properly which is what this post is about.
I've leaned it out and its running well, really screams on this 25% nitro fuel i got. My question is how do you know when to stop leaning it out? How much smoke should there be? There is still a nice cloud of smoke and I dont feel its performing optimally. Dont get me wrong there is plenty of power there and much to the detriment of its new look it does the "wheelies on command" and quite often flicks back over on it self.
The problem is when I have it off its wheels.. It doesnt quite rev smoothly... you know that popping sort of sound (like miss firing) when its running rich? It happens a lot at the more middle to upper range RPM. Is that sound a sign its running too rich? or possibly too lean? I dont know since im virtually i nitro noob. Not only this but ive noticed that on some of the movies some of you guys can really get the truck to flip in the air or have no problem adjusting its angle with the throttle... my rig seems slightly less willing to do this and im thinking that its possibly because of not ideal HSN tuning...
I guess what Im trying to say is that I suspect that the engine is capable of more but I'm scared i might lean it out too far. I want the engine to last because I know its a great engine and i cant afford to rpelace it when it dies.
No big gripe, but I wanted to say high |

| In all honesty I personaly think to break-in properly then to lean just a little, and stay around stock settings. My picco is hardly leaned out (pracically still stock) setting and it still fly's past other people's trucks. If you are looking for speed or torque, just simply change the gearing. I think learning gearing ratios would proabaly be more benifcal anyways. |
Original .21 modified and upgrade from the ground up to the monster it is today. |

Cheers all.
Great Site Ausrc.com
I go there regularily to the forums to read but I have no account yet.
Im from Sydney, busted my fourth and last Spur gear today unfortunately so I cant tune it for a few days, but its running well, Im still fairly certain its running a little rich though. I wish I had a vid cam too upload some videos... Some great jumps and landings at the park.
Thanks again peeps... This truck is one tough Mother F'er |
